• 1.25kg good braising steak (preferably chuck steak)
• 150g rindless lean smoked back bacon (about 5 rashers)
• 1 tbsp sunflower oil
• 2 medium onions (finely chopped)
• 3 garlic cloves (crushed)
• 300ml red wine
• 2 tbsp tomato puree
• 500ml cold water

• 2 large bay leaves
